Severe Weather Warning
for Damaging Surf

for parts of Metropolitan, Illawarra and Hunter Forecast Districts.

Issued at 9:33 am Tuesday, 5 July 2022.

Weather Situation
A low over the Tasman Sea extends a trough to the central coast of NSW.
DAMAGING SURF for the following areas:
Hunter, Metropolitan and Illawarra
VERY HEAVY SURF which may lead to localised damage and coastal erosion is possible along the central coast of NSW this morning. Waves will gradually ease during the afternoon.
Beach conditions in these areas could be dangerous and people should stay well away from the surf and surf exposed areas.
A separate hazardous surf warning is also current along the NSW central coast today.
Locations which may be affected include Sydney, Wollongong, Bulli, Port Kembla, and Kiama.
Wave buoy observation off the Sydney coast have reached 5.4 metres significant wave height.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Stay vigilant and monitor conditions. Note that the landscape may have changed following bushfires.
* For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.

The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 3:00 pm AEST Tuesday.
Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 210. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.

Moderate To Major Flood Warning For The Macquarie River

MAJOR FLOODING POSSIBLE AT WARREN WEDNESDAY
MODERATE FLOODING POSSIBLE AT NARROMINE TUESDAY
Moderate to heavy rainfall since Friday has caused minor to moderate flooding across the Bell and Macquarie River catchments.
The Bell River at Wellington fell below the minor flood level (3.40 metres) early Tuesday morning where the river peaked at 6.46 metres early Monday morning with moderate flooding.
The Macquarie River at Wellington fell below the minor flood level (4.00 metres) Monday afternoon where the river peaked at 5.74 metres early Monday morning with minor flooding.
The Macquarie River at Dubbo fell below the minor flood level (5.50 metres) early Tuesday morning where the river peaked at 6.94 metres Monday afternoon with minor flooding.
The main flood peak along the Macquarie River is now downstream of Baroona where the river peaked early Tuesday morning. This flood peak has the potential to cause moderate flooding at Narromine and major flooding at Warren Town.

Macquarie River downstream of Burrendong Dam:
Minor flooding is occurring at Narromine where moderate flooding is possible. Major flooding is possible at Warren.
The Macquarie River at Narromine may peak near the moderate flood level (9.1 m) around midday Tuesday.

The Macquarie River at Warren Town is expected to exceed the minor flood level (7.50 m) around midday Tuesday. The river level is likely to exceed the moderate flood level (8.50 m) early morning Wednesday and a major flood peak (9.00 metres) may occur during Wednesday.

MAJOR FLOODING CONTINUES AT NORTH RICHMOND JUST BELOW THE MARCH 2021 AND MARCH 2022 FLOOD LEVELS
MAJOR FLOODING OCCURRING AT SACKVILLE, LOWER PORTLAND AND WISEMANS FERRY SIMILAR TO THE MARCH 2022 FLOOD WITH FURTHER RISES POSSIBLE
MAJOR FLOODING OCCURRING AT WALLACIA
Major flooding is continuing along the Upper Nepean River at Menangle where river levels peaked at 16.61 metres Sunday morning.
Major flooding is occurring along the Hawkesbury River at North Richmond where river levels peaked at 14.18 metres early Monday morning. Renewed rises resulted in a second similar peak of 14.19 metres Monday evening. The peaks observed are slightly below the March 2021 flood level (14.38 metres) and higher than the March 2022 flood peak (14.08 metres).
Major flooding is occurring along the Hawkesbury River at Windsor, where river levels have exceeded the March 2022 flood event (13.80 metres).
Major flooding is occurring along the Hawkesbury River at Sackville, Lower Portland and Wisemans Ferry with levels likely to be similar to the March 2022 flood levels.
Further rainfall is forecast over the next 6-12 hours, which may cause further rises and prolonged flooding. This situation is being closely monitored, and revised predictions will be provided as necessary.
A Severe Weather Warning for heavy rainfall is current for the Metropolitan, parts of Hunter and Central Tablelands Forecast Districts.

Upper Nepean River:
Major flooding is likely occurring along the Upper Nepean at Wallacia. Moderate flooding is occurring at Menangle and Camden.
The Nepean River at Menangle Bridge peaked at 16.61 metres around 07:50 am Sunday and is currently at 11.61 metres and falling, with moderate flooding.
The Nepean River at Menangle Bridge is likely to remain above the moderate flood level (9.20 m) until late Tuesday afternoon.

The Nepean River at Camden Weir peaked at 12.72 metres around 02:00 pm Sunday and is currently at 10.55 metres and falling, with moderate flooding.
The Nepean River at Camden Weir may remain above the moderate flood level (8.30 m) until Tuesday afternoon.

The Nepean River at Wallacia Weir peaked at 13.84 metres around 02:45 am Monday. Wallacia Weir gauge failed Monday morning. Model output suggests major flooding is continuing.
The Nepean River at Wallacia Weir may remain above the major flood level (11.00 m) during Tuesday morning.

Hawkesbury and Lower Nepean River:
Major flooding is occurring at North Richmond, Windsor, Sackville, Lower Portland and Wiseman's Ferry. Minor flooding is occurring at Penrith.
The Nepean River at Penrith peaked at 9.51 metres around 02:00 am Monday and is currently at 6.53 metres and falling, with minor flooding.
The Nepean River at Penrith may remain above the minor flood level (3.90 m) until Tuesday evening.

The Hawkesbury River at North Richmond (WPS) peaked at 14.18 metres around 03:15 am Monday. Renewed rises were observed overnight Monday with a second peak of 14.19 metres around midnight Monday. The river level is currently at 14.06 metres and steady, with major flooding.
The Hawkesbury River at North Richmond (WPS) is likely to remain around 14.00 metres during Tuesday, with major flooding.

The Hawkesbury River at Windsor (WPS) is likely to reach around 14.00 metres around 08:00 am Tuesday, with major flooding. Further rises possible.

The Hawkesbury River at Sackville is likely to reach around 10.50 metres Tuesday morning, with major flooding. Further rises possible.

Lower Portland gauge is currently offline. It is estimated Lower Portland is currently at 8.70 metres, with major flooding.
The Hawkesbury River at Lower Portland may reach around 9.00 metres Tuesday afternoon, with major flooding. Further rises possible.

The Hawkesbury River at Wisemans Ferry may reach around 5.60 metres during Tuesday evening, with major flooding. Further rises possible.

Colo River:
Moderate flooding is occurring along the Colo River.
The Colo River at Putty Road is currently around 10.00 metres and rising with moderate flooding (estimated). Further rises are possible.

RENEWED MINOR FLOODING POSSIBLE AT GOSTWYCK FROM TUESDAY NIGHT
River levels peaked below minor flood levels during Monday morning along the Paterson and Williams Rivers at Dungog, Mill Dam Falls, and Gostwyck.
Further rainfall is forecast to develop during Tuesday, which may cause renewed rises and minor flooding along the Paterson River at Gostwyck from Tuesday night.
This situation is being closely monitored, and revised predictions will be provided as necessary.
A Severe Weather Warning for heavy rainfall is current for parts of the Hunter and Metropolitan Forecast Districts.

Paterson River:
Renewed minor flooding is possible along the Paterson River at Gostwyck.

MAJOR FLOODING OCCURRING AT BULGA, AND POSSIBLE AT WOLLOMBI
MINOR FLOODING OCCURRING AT MAITLAND AND LIKELY AT SINGLETON FROM TUESDAY AFTERNOON
Heavy rainfall since Sunday morning has caused river level rises across the Hunter River catchment.
Significant river level rises have been observed along Wollombi Brook upstream of Wollombi, where moderate flooding is occurring, and major flooding is possible from Tuesday afternoon. Downstream at Bulga, major flooding is occurring.
Along the Lower Hunter River at Singleton, minor flooding is possible from Tuesday afternoon. Minor flooding continues at Maitland, where river levels peaked Monday evening. Renewed rises are expected at Maitland from late Tuesday morning.
Further rainfall is forecast for the remainder of Tuesday into Wednesday, which may cause further river level rises and prolonged flooding. This situation is being closely monitored, and revised predictions will be provided as necessary.
A Severe Weather Warning for heavy rainfall is current for parts of the Hunter and Metropolitan Forecast Districts.

Wollombi Brook:
Major flooding is occurring along the Wollombi Brook.
The Wollombi Brook at Wollombi may reach the major flood level (12.20 m) Tuesday afternoon.

The Wollombi Brook at Bulga is currently at 5.26 metres and rising with major flooding.
River rises and major flooding will continue during Tuesday, and the Wollombi Brook at Bulga is expected to reach around 5.40 metres late Tuesday morning, and may reach around 6.60 metres (similar to the flood in March 2021) overnight Tuesday into Wednesday.

Lower Hunter:
Minor flooding is occurring along the Lower Hunter River at Maitland. Minor flooding is possible at Singleton.
The Hunter River at Singleton may reach the minor flood level (10.00 metres) Tuesday afternoon. Further rises are possible.

The Hunter River at Maitland (Belmore Bridge) peaked at 7.09 metres around 06:00 pm Monday and is currently at 6.07 metres and steady, with minor flooding.
Renewed rises are expected from late Tuesday morning.The Hunter River at Maitland (Belmore Bridge) is likely to reach around 7.00 metres Tuesday evening with minor flooding.

Heavy rainfall since Saturday has caused significant river level rises along the Wyong River and its tributaries which feed into Tuggerah Lake.
Minor flooding is occurring at Long Jetty with lake levels rising to the major flood level (1.60 metres) possible Tuesday evening.
Further rainfall is forecast for the reminder of Tuesday, which may cause further river level rises and prolonged flooding. This situation is being closely monitored, and revised predictions will be provided as necessary.

Tuggerah Lake:
Minor flooding is occurring in Tuggerah Lake with major flooding possible.

Severe Weather Warning
for Damaging Winds And Heavy Rainfall

for parts of Hunter and Metropolitan Forecast Districts.

Issued at 5:05 am Tuesday, 5 July 2022.

Heavy rainfall and damaging winds easing Tuesday morning.

Weather Situation
A trough over the central coast is causing moderate to possibly heavy rainfall at times. Rainfall rates are forecast to east during Tuesday morning.
DAMAGING WINDS and HEAVY RAINFALL for the following areas:
Hunter and Metropolitan
Localised MODERATE to HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING remains possible Tuesday morning over parts of the Hunter district. Isolated three-hourly rainfall totals between 40 to 65 mm are possible.
DAMAGING WINDS averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts up to 90 km/h are possible along the northern Metropolitan and southern Hunter coastal fringe, with an easing trend Tuesday morning. The damaging winds may lead to debris on roads and provide the risk for trees toppling in softer and very saturated soils.
Rainfall will further contribute to flooding already being experienced and maintains the potential for landslides.
Various Flood Warnings and Watches are current, so please refer to those flood warnings at http://www.bom.gov.au/nsw/warnings/ and heed the advice of authorities.
A separate Severe Weather Warning for Damaging Surf is also current along parts of the central coastline.
Locations which may be affected include Gosford, Cessnock, Maitland, Sydney, Dungog and Kulnura.
Severe weather is no longer occurring in the Central Tablelands district and the warning for this district is CANCELLED.

Norah Head recorded a 95km/h gust at 12:33 am
Bellambi recorded 72 km/h sustained with gusts up to 95 km/h at 3:30 pm Monday.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.

* Trees that have been damaged by fire are likely to be more unstable and more likely to fall.
* Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill.
* Don't drive, ride or walk through flood water.
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
* If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue.
* Be aware that run-off from rainfall in fire affected areas may behave differently and be more rapid. It may also contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks.
* After bushfires, heavy rain and the loss of foliage can make the ground soft and heavy, leading to a greater chance of landslides.
* Stay vigilant and monitor conditions. Note that the landscape may have changed following bushfires.
* For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.

Weather Situation
Surf and swell conditions are expected to be hazardous for coastal activities such as rock fishing, boating, and swimming in the following areas.
Hazardous Surf Warning for the following areas:
Macquarie Coast, Hunter Coast, Sydney Coast, Illawarra Coast and Batemans Coast

NSW Police Force, Marine Area Command advise that:
People should consider staying out of the water and avoid walking near surf-exposed areas.
Rock fishers should avoid coastal rock platforms exposed to the ocean and seek a safe location that is sheltered from the surf.
Boaters planning to cross shallow water and ocean bars should consider changing or delaying their voyage.
Boaters already on the water should carry the appropriate safety equipment and wear a lifejacket.
Boaters should remember to log on with their local Marine Rescue radio base, via VHF Radio or the Marine Rescue APP, and consider their safety management plan.

FLOODING IS OCCURRING IN MANY CATCHMENTS AROUND THE ILLAWARRA, SYDNEY, CENTRAL COAST AND HUNTER REGIONS, INCLUDING MAJOR FLOODING IN THE HAWKESBURY AND NEPEAN RIVERS.
FURTHER FLOODING IS POSSIBLE IN THE CENTRAL COAST AND HUNTER REGIONS DURING MONDAY AND TUESDAY.

The East Coast Low has weakened into a trough over the Hunter district, while a strong high over the Great Australian Bight extends a ridge to the southern Tasman Sea. The combination of these features is bringing wet and windy conditions to many eastern areas of New South Wales, with severe weather about central parts of the coast. Weather conditions will gradually ease during Monday and Tuesday, although the trough will linger on the northern half of the coast through to Tuesday.
This may cause localised flash flooding and renewed and higher flooding along rivers where flood warnings are current as well as bring flooding to additional parts of the Hunter and Central Coast.
A Severe Weather Warning for Heavy Rainfall has been issued for the Metropolitan, Illawarra and parts of Hunter and Central Tablelands Forecast Districts.
The weather system may cause riverine flooding during Monday and Tuesday for the catchments listed. Flood Classes (minor, moderate, major) are only defined for catchments where the Bureau provides a flood warning service.
